The Sabuk and Gohan regions of Jeongseon, Gangwon-do, were Korea's representative coal mining sites. When the coal industry boomed in the 1970's and 1980's, money was overflowing enough to say that dogs carry ten thousand won. However, in 1989, the coal industry walked down due to the rationalization policy of the abandoned mine and production cuts. As the coal mine disappeared, the mining villages of Sabuk and Gohan were devastated. Like the words `` Sae-ji-ma '', they rose to coal and stagnated to coal. Now, Sabuk and Gohan are rising again with tourism based on coal. Along the fascinating coal mine attractions, we look forward to the past, present and future of Jeongseon.

The center of Jeongseon Coal Mine Trip is Untan Altitude. Reminiscent of China's Chama Island, this road used to carry coal from Manhangjae to Hambaek Station. Trekking on the Untan Altitude requires time and stamina as it is the only mountain trail in Korea to be built at high altitudes of more than 1,100 meters. But don't be scared before you start. Because there is an easy way to climb. The mountain gondola (2832m) of High1 Ski Resort is used.
Gondolas are the easiest means of access to Untan Altitude.
Gondola from Mountain Base to Mountain Top takes 20 minutes to the summit. Don't think of a gondola as a simple means of transportation. It is also a moving observatory. Skiing, Gangwon Land and Baekdudaegan are spread under your feet while riding the gondola. The slopes on the ski slopes are filled with summer wildflowers such as daisies and lions. The ridges of Baekdudaegan are pushed like waves to create spectacular scenery. You can enjoy the scenery from the gondola that you can't see without climbing the high mountains.
Gondola to the top of the mountain

Once you've climbed the mountain top, you don't have to head straight to Untan Altitude. Surrounded by a rustic colony of wildflowers. A shy flower blooms in the wind and sends out a gesture of temptation. The mountain trails behind the wildflower community make it a mountain country.
There is more to see. High1 Alpine Botanical Garden is located at the top of the mountain at 1380m above sea level. In the highest botanical garden in Korea, 330 species of alpine plants are classified into themes such as Manbyeongwon, Alpine Grass Garden, Rock Garden, Sink Garden, and Wildflower Garden.

Wildflowers bloom below the gondola
Time to trek to the full-scale Untango. You can meet Untan Altitude at the top of the mountain by 1.4km down the mountain porch behind the observatory. From here, take the road to High1 Hotel, Manhangjae. It's a bit uphill, but the road is flat and smooth, making walking easy. Taebaek's spirits take off while walking for two and a half hours.
Skyway from Uncle Altitude to the summit
As it is the only mountain in Korea, it is a mountain path that leads to highlands and ridges that are more than 1,000 meters above sea level. The reason why Untan Altitude is special is that the beautiful landscape contains the history of the coal industry. The old road that carried coal. When the Hambaek Station was opened in 1957, about 2000 construction workers made shovels and pickaxes to transport coal.
In the past, coal chambers used trucks
The 1177 gang that meets during the trek is an acid witness to the coal industry. The 1177 gang, which was first opened in the area by Dongwon Sabuk Mining Co., Ltd., has restored the entrance of the mine. Hanging on the shaft, a wooden structure that supports the shaft, also hangs the oysters that the miners hung to die.
1177 Gang Entrance at Untan Altitude
For half a century, a truck loaded with coal flew black dust, creating a trail that Gangwon Land combined with the history of coal mines. The busy roads of the trucks became heavenly paths with hundreds of wild flowers growing on them. It also meant 'high roads with clouds spread like rugs'.
The road is flat and smooth and easy to walk.
In addition to Untango Island, there are several promenades called Skyway. There is a squirrel, a hare, a deer, and an elk course, and each course has a name that shows the characteristics of the section, such as Sky Mae-gil, Mountain Bamboo Road, Mt. Unless you're on a coal-themed trip, you can walk on the sky and breathe with nature.

If you are curious about the actual appearance of the coal mine, Samtan Artmine will solve that question.
Samtan Art Mine has been reborn as an art space
This place is special in that it uses the actual abandoned mine.
Sculptures in the Laundry Room
'Samtan' refers to Samcheok Coal, which was one of the representative coal mines in Korea. 'Art' and 'Mine' are derived from 'Art' and 'Mine', the English notation of art and coal mines.

The Samcheok coal thrust, which had been mining coal since 1964, was abandoned in October 2001, and it became a new space by combining culture and art.

The clan chiefs and laundries, which show the miners' lives, have been transformed into wonderful exhibition halls with more than 100,000 works of art collected from 150 countries and works of contemporary art artists.

If you go to Taebaek beyond the rugged mountain range in Jeongseon, traces of the heritage, life and history of the coal industry remain under the name of Cheoram Coal Mining Village.
Cheoram Coal Mining Village intact
During the prosperity of the mining village, the buildings such as Perika, Honam Super, Bonghwa Restaurant, Jinju Castle, and Hanyang Tea House, which were booming in the magpie building used by miners and their families, were made into historical villages.

The magpie foot building refers to the pillar, or the building that built the magpie foot, on Cheoramcheon. It is a building that many people can live in a small area.
Exhibit showing the life of miners
Signboards and crumbling buildings of old faded shops welcome travelers by transforming them into galleries and exhibition rooms where miners live and experience contemporary art.

There are lots of interesting things to see from the records of the miners' living notices and records of the residents who recorded the personal information of the residents, as well as the exhibits recreating various household goods and iron alleys used at the time.
If you climb the observatory, you can see the Cheoram Coal Mine.
Coal mines piled up like mountains are still in the coal mine across the street. The Cheoram Coal Mining Cousin is a space where you can meet the old look of coal mine more vividly than the coal museum made of billions of dollars.
