Nostalgic walking tour of Masan, walking along the mural wall village of Gogopa

Changwon, Gyeongnam, South Korea

From autumn 2013 to winter, the city of Masan got attention again. It is because of the drama <Response, 1994> that sparked a big topic. The family of Najung, the owner of the boarding house, and the garbage, the main character, were all from Masan. In the drama, Masan was often mentioned, and in the meeting scene that gave a big smile, 'Masan's 3rd Gapbu' sons also appeared. As such, in the background of 1994, Masan City existed proudly. At that time, no one would have thought that Masan City would disappear. Masan was a nationwide city in the 1970s and 1980s and the best city in Gyeongnam. However, in July 2010, it was integrated with Changhae City along with Jinhae City, and now exists as Masan Membership District and Masan Happo District within Changwon City.

The name Masansi has disappeared, but the charm of the space called Masan still remains. The historic town of Masan evokes memories and romance that cannot be felt in a shiny and refined new city. On a warm spring day, let's take a walk from Changdong, the largest bustling street in Masan, past Bulim Market and go to the mural village of Gagopa Koburanggil, which was built in Seongho-dong, Seongho-dong. The rich fragrance that the drama <Response, 1994> delivered gave rises like a haze on a spring day.

Masan Changdong Arts Village
The beginning of the walking tour in Masan was at Changdong Arts Village
Changdong, the center of the old Masan. In <Response, 1994>, there are both Citizen Theater and Koayangdae, which appeared as a symbol of Masan while being the 3rd and 4th Gabbulans in Masan. Is guarded). As such, Changdong was an important place in Masan. However, afterwards, the commercialization of the city led to a decline and the loneliness remained. Fortunately, the Changdong Arts Village project, a downtown regeneration project, began in 2012 and is regaining some vitality.
Changdong Arts Village Alley
From the 1950s to the 80s, Changdong Art Village is a street of culture and art that decorated Changdong, the center of commerce and culture and art, with three themes: Masan Art Trail Alley, Tattoo Art Alley, and Ecole Changdong Alley. Alongside the alleys, there are plenty of cute murals and installation art, and shops and workshops with perfect personality provide time for memories and romance. Don't miss the fun of eating, as the traditional deep-seated restaurants such as Changdong Bokhee House and Changdong Dessert, which were popular during the prosperous season, and Goryeodang and Koayangdae, both mountains of Masan Bakery, are all in this area.

After the trip to the alley of Changdong Art Village, which continues like a maze, let's move on to Bulim Market, one of Masan's largest commercial districts along with Changdong in the 1980s. Also known as Gyeongnam's representative apparel wholesale market and Tteokbokki alley, Burim Market has also declined since the 1990s. As the number of empty shops increased, a creative crafts village was launched in late 2013 as part of the project to save the original downtown. Various themed workshops such as Korean paper, cloisonne, and ceramics move in to provide attractions and experiences.

A new and emerging attraction, the mural village in Gogopa Komburgil
Not far from Chang-dong and Burim market, when I heard the story of the new mural village 'Gagopa Cobbrang-gil', I asked the locals, and the person I don't know is a placenta.

As it is the latest attraction completed in December 2013, it is still unfamiliar to Masan people.

The clothesline hanging outside, the flower pots on the street, and the old man-jeong in the neighborhood are harmonized with murals, making it even more friendly.

Tattoo Museum overlooking Masan
Mural village is not the end. After walking a little past Shinchusan Apartment, you will see the Tattoo Museum and Masan City Museum. The tattoo museum, where the exterior of the building and the surrounding natural environment catches the eye, is a space where you can experience the world of artwork by the artist and sculptor.
